Zanu-PF has been given the mandate to preside over Zimbabwe’s governance issues for the next five years. The party no doubt won because of its people oriented programmes and policies. The people voted the party into office because they have confidence that its programmes and policies are going to change their lives for the better.
The party should therefore immediately get down to business and deliver on its promises. The people have suffered for a long time due to poor performance of the economy. The inclusive Government, while being credited for stabilising the economy, has failed to meet the people’s expectations because the parties had divergent ideologies and as such were not pulling in the same direction.
Zanu-PF, which during its campaigns blamed the bickering within the inclusive Government for most of the government’s failures, should now demonstrate that it can deliver. President Mugabe’s immediate task is to appoint a cabinet of men and women who can make the difference. This time there is no room for passengers because the nation is looking forward to an immediate change to their lives.
Those appointed to cabinet should be men and women of high integrity whose public conduct is beyond reproach. Corruption which has been singled out as the major stumbling block to development should have no place in the new cabinet. It is a fact that Zimbabwe is endowed with natural resources and these resources should transform the people’s lives. The Government should not be detracted by voices in the wilderness that are speaking against the will of the people.
The people have spoken by voting overwhelmingly for Zanu-PF and whoever is not accepting the outcome is working against the will of the people. Elections are an exercise to seek mandate from the people hence they are open to all Zimbabweans who feel they are prepared to be servants of the people as either councillors, MPs or the President. After the elections the winners and the losers should unite and work as a team to develop the country.
The electorate has, through these elections, made a loud and clear statement to the winners and those that might seek public office in future that those who fail to deliver are punished. We have already stated that the elections are over and as a nation we need to move forward. The country is facing many challenges and as a nation we should find solutions to these challenges. The economy is performing far below expectations and as a result many people are out of employment. Industries have either closed or scaled down production and Government working with other stakeholders should come up with a programme to revive industries.
There are many projects whose implementation had been put on hold as the investors awaited the outcome of the elections. There are also many projects whose implementation was affected by the bickering in the inclusive Government such as the New ZimSteel in Redcliff. It is our fervent hope that such projects will start rolling soon. Zimbabwe’s economy is agro-based and during the past four years of the inclusive Government, there was not much allocated to the agricultural sector in terms of resources.
Thousands of families have been allocated land in prime farming areas and Government’s task should be to capacitate these farmers so that they fully utilise this land. The agricultural sector should provide the much needed raw materials for our industries. The emphasis now should be on reviving the manufacturing sector.
The obtaining situation whereby the bulk of our goods are imported should not be allowed to continue.
A country’s economy cannot be sustained by retailing imported goods as is the case now. Zimbabwe has made get strides in education and the country as a result boasts of a very rich human resources base which is a critical component of commerce and industry. We want to once again implore Zanu-PF to immediately implement its programme of action that it sold to the electorate during its campaigns.
