EDITORIAL COMMENT : Reward loyal employees

LOYAL and hard-working employees who are dedicated to duty  are hard to come by nowadays.

The majority appear to lack both passion and commitment.

All they want is their pay cheque and to abuse the company resources.

They make sure they milk the company resources, doing side hustles, which are not on their job description. Some are now stealing from their employers while others are simply hopeless.

Poor remuneration and harsh working conditions have fuelled negligence at the workplace. Then, there are some workers who deliberately sabotage their supervisors.

There are, however, some employees who are dedicated to work despite poor remuneration.

High levels of loyalty have seen such employees being called names by fellow workers or disliked for their commitment. In this era, there are a few bosses who honour their employees with life-changing gifts.

And, when such gifts are handed over to the hard-working and loyal employees, the workforce will be enlightened.

In cases where loyal employees are honoured on merit, there are no complaints, since other workers will be motivated.

Nash Paints founder, Tinashe Mutarisi, instantly comes to mind as one of the employers with a heart for his loyal servants.

Mutarisi recently gifted one of his employees with a US$120 000 house for his loyalty. He spoke fondly about the gentleman, who has been dedicated to work, for years.

Mutarisi said he now takes him as family because of the good service he has offered his company.

The benefactor was also at a loss for words to describe his joy of being a landlord in one of the capital’s leafy suburbs.

He vowed to continue performing wonders as a reciprocal gesture for the love shown by his paymaster.

Mutarisi has challenged other employers to remember their loyal foot soldiers. Employers need to appreciate, and reward, their loyal servants.

Such rewards might come in the form of a house but even a simple token will motivate the workers.

Loyal and long-serving employees deserve to be honoured and rewarded since they take the workplace as their second homes.

Top management also needs to be in touch with their workforce and take their grievances seriously.

Workers also need their grievances to be addressed on time to ensure they don’t get disgruntled, which may drive poor performances.

Through engagement and transparency, the workers’ attitude is bound to change and this creates a very loyal workforce. Loyalty comes with rewards and it’s never too late for rogue employees to change.

Since we spend most of our time at work, we need to enjoy what we are doing and be loyal to our paymasters.

Mutarisi has shown the way that when there is a strong bond between employers and employees, the right environment can be created for both parties to produce the kind of results which will give a lot of value to the company. It’s refreshing to note that, for all the challenges which are facing a sizable number of our firms, there are companies out there that are doing well.

And, their owners are prepared to reward the people making a difference.
