THE growing reports of teachers allegedly abusing school girls in learning institutions are deeply disturbing and demand urgent attention from all sectors of the society.
Schools are supposed to be safe havens where children acquire knowledge, develop their talents, and prepare for their future. Parents entrust teachers with the responsibility of guiding, protecting, and nurturing their children. Unfortunately, when some educators abuse the trust bestowed upon them and take advantage of vulnerable learners. They, not only destroy young lives, but also undermine the integrity and reputation of the entire education system.
The relationship between a teacher and a learner is founded on trust, respect, and professionalism.
Teachers are regarded as parents in loco parentis, a legal and moral principle which places them in a position of responsibility while learners are under their care. This means that teachers are expected to protect learners from harm and provide an environment that promotes their well-being and development.
When a teacher engages in any form of sexual abuse, harassment, exploitation, or inappropriate conduct with a school girl, it represents a gross violation of that sacred responsibility. Such actions amount to a betrayal of trust that cannot and should not be tolerated. The consequences of abuse are often devastating and long-lasting. Once investigations establish wrongdoing, all perpetrators must be brought to book regardless of their status, position, or influence within society.
The law must also take a firm and uncompromising stance against offenders. Teachers who abuse school girls should face punitive punishment that reflects the seriousness of their crimes.
In addition to dismissal from employment and deregistration from the teaching profession, those found guilty must face criminal prosecution and the full consequences prescribed by law.

Strong punishment serves several important purposes.

Beyond punishment, prevention efforts must also be strengthened. Schools should implement robust child protection policies, establish confidential reporting mechanisms, and regularly educate both learners and staff on issues of abuse and safeguarding.
Parents, communities, and education authorities must remain vigilant and work together to create a culture where the welfare of learners is always prioritised. The time has come to nip in the bud this worrisome and growing trend of teachers abusing school girls. Protecting children is a collective responsibility that requires decisive action from parents, schools, communities, and law enforcement agencies. Every perpetrator must be investigated and brought to book without fear or favour. Those found on the wrong side of the law must face the full wrath of the law. Only through firm action, accountability, and unwavering commitment to child protection can society restore confidence in the education system and ensure that schools remain safe places of learning for every child.
