Editorial Comment: Shun dubious online financial schemes

Syndicates of daring crooks selling “brilliant” business ventures online never cease to exist.

They target mainly desperate people who are ready to make quick returns.

Those in the diaspora can easily fall prey to their trickery.

Here at home, they target mainly the gullible who easily fall victim to their deception.

These con artists are sweet talkers who speak with a forked tongue.

It’s best to shun such schemes whenever approached.

Many innocent people have lost vast sums of money to various fake online business schemes.

The victims only realise that they have been duped when it’s too late and the crooks behind such schemes have vanished with their money.

Despite several warnings, people continue to fall prey to these con artists.

Globally, there are people who earn a living through these pyramid schemes.

Yesterday we ran a story about a Masvingo church bishop who allegedly swindled close to 30 people in a botched medical cannabis farming deal.

Bishop Trust Sangweni, of the Evangelical Apostolic Christian Mission Church, is said to have formed a cannabis farming group.

Members of the group were convinced they had joined a life-changing initiative led by the man of the cloth.

They later realised that the bishop was a con artist after investing their savings on a project that didn’t exist.

One of the victims, who opened up to H-Metro lost US$1 600 to the bishop’s money spinning venture.

After making a substantial amount of money through his deception, Bishop Sangweni reportedly relocated to South Africa.

His wife confirmed that her husband had skipped the border and those that put money into his non-existent venture were besieging her demanding their money back.

A case of fraud has been lodged with the police.

Now that the bishop has vanished with group members’ money, the last hope lies with the police.

However, this issue should be a lesson to those who want to make easy money.

People need to do a background check of everyone they intend doing business with.

A thorough research can save people from being fleeced.

Proper investment can still be done with entities that have a traceable history.

Some victims of fraud are actually  recommended by people they know, but when it comes to money issues, learn to trust nobody.

Some close friends or relatives have become so wicked for the love of money.

The love of money can drive people into doing the unthinkable.

Just remember that Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus Christ for just 30 pieces of gold because of his love for money.

So the people you trust most can also be at the forefront of your financial losses.
