EUNICE Dembo, the widow of superstar sungura musician Leonard, is a very happy woman right now.
And, so is her entire family.
The family was honoured by businessman Wicknell Chivayo who gave Mai Dembo a new 2025 Toyota Fortuner car and a US$50 000 cash donation to start her business.
Her two sons — Morgan and Tendai — and her daughter Fenistia were also given Toyota Aqua cars. This all stems from her exclusive interview with H-Metro in which Mai Dembo laid bare the challenges she was facing as a widow.
While she didn’t specifically appeal to Chivayo, the businessman plunged into the story when he posted a comment on the H-Metro story on our platforms.
On Friday, as the nation celebrated Youth Day, Chivayo gifted the Dembo family.
Mai Dembo said she was speechless as she thanked Chivayo for his helping hand.
While the businessmen has given various musicians cars, it’s the first time that he has given cars to an entire family.
Mai Dembo said she will use the cash donation to start a business and she wants to ensure that it will be successful to such an extent that Chivayo will be proud of having built a foundation for her.
She said this donation honours the legacy of her late husband Leonard who is widely regarded as one of the greatest Zimbabwean musicians of all-times.
At H-Metro, we are proud that we played a small part in this story, which has a happy ending.
We are proud that history will recall that, at a crucial time for the Dembo family, we were there for them and we played our small part in helping transform their lives.
Without our interview, it is unlikely that Mai Dembo and her kids would have received this helping hand.
Our interview highlighted her plight and showed that she really needed help.
We could have buried the story in the inside pages of our newspaper but we felt that Dembo was very big and the story of his family, and the challenges they are facing, deserved front page treatment.
There are some people who believe that we are a newspaper which is only interested in reporting about sex scandals, crime and sport. The reality is that we are not that kind of newspaper.
We are a tabloid that celebrates when some students pass their O-Level and A-Level exams with flying colours.
We are a newspaper which will devote acres of space to cover the exploits of those students.
We are a newspaper which celebrates the achievements of Zimbabweans and that is why when the Warriors qualify for a major tournament, we run that story on our front page.
We were at the Zimbabwe Community Trailblazers Awards because we wanted to cover the beautiful stories of those who were being honoured.
This is what gave us the opportunity to interview Mai Dembo and the rest, as they say, is now history.
Mai Dembo has no apology to make to anyone.
Her family deserves everything which is being given to them.
