CHALK it up to tax drama in Hwange.
In a shock move, the Hwange Local Board has introduced a snooker table tariff that forces owners to cough up US$80.50 per year just to keep the game going.
The announcement, made by town secretary Ndumiso Mdlalose, has raised eyebrows among bar and leisure spot owners, many of whom say they were caught completely off guard.
“We wish to inform you that an annual tariff of USD 80.50, inclusive of VAT, is due for the operation of a snooker table at your premises,” said Mdlalose. “Failure to pay will force Council to shut down your table.”
The local board insists it is all legal and above board. They say the fee is part of their 2025 budget already signed off by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
“This isn’t new. The snooker table fee was introduced back in 2022 after proper consultations,” the council said on its X account.
Officials claim the charge is aimed at boosting local revenue for service delivery. But for many residents, it feels like a foul play on fun.
With the pool cue under threat, operators now face a tough choice. Pay up or pack away the tables.
