The announcement by Zesa this week that Zimbabweans will no longer face load shedding due to increased electricity generation capacity, has impressed Cabinet, which said local interventions have paid off.
Speaking during yesterday’s post-Cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said Cabinet “noted with satisfaction” the announcement that load-shedding had ended.
The development comes as a result of the interventions implemented by the Second Republic led by President Mnangagwa, thereby fulfilling the mantra “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/ Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo’.
Zesa announced that it is now producing enough electricity from its power plants, with minimal imports, to meet demand by domestic and industrial consumers. The Second Republic successfully implemented the expansion of Hwange Thermal Power Station Units 7 and 8, each with a capacity of 300MW. The two Units are now undergoing the final synchronisation phase, and being supported by the establishment of solar parks by Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Kariba Hydro-power Station, where 300MW were also added during an expansion process that culminated with President Mnangagwa officially commissioning the project in 2018, has also increased electricity generation.
Yesterday, Zimbabwe was generating 1 318MW, with 535MW coming from Hwange, 750MW from Kariba, 19MW from Harare and 14MW from Munyati.
As a result, consumers have been enjoying load-shedding free days with the productive sector being the biggest beneficiary, helping them to ramp up production.
