The youth particularly pupils in school are an indispensable avenue through which environmental information can be cascaded to every part of the country. In recognition of the crucial role schoolchildren play in environmental management and protection, EMA launched environmental school debates in 2010.
Who participated?
In 2011 a total of 466 schools participated in the schools debate competitions from district level up to the national level.
What was the theme?
The schools debates were held under the theme “Lack of environmental awareness and not economic hardships is the cause of environmental challenges in Zimbabwe”.
The topic required great academic exploration and it drew a battle line on the underlying causes of environmental degradation in Zimbabwe.
Pupils were given an opportunity to explore the role of environmental education and awareness in the management of country’s natural resources. The big question was, “can persistent environmental challenges common in Zimbabwe be attributed to ignorance or it was a result of economic hardships”. There were convincing arguments from both sides and indeed, as pupils brought out important points.
For the pupils the academic explorations, arguments and analysis displayed during debate competitions were indeed an opportunity for learning.
