Information Communication Technology permanent secretary Engineer Sam Kundishora said on the sidelines of the e-Tech Africa Expo conference and exhibition e-commerce was critical to the growth of the tourism sector.
“Tourists do not want to carry cash when they travel. The sector should co-operate with local banks to allow tourists to make payments before they come to Zimbabwe,” he said.
Through international banking transactions, tourists make hotel reservations, pay bills in advance and negotiate for packages in cases where they travel in groups.
Eng Kundishora said the electronic transactions were important to the sustainable growth and development of tourism.
He said recent surveys showed that Zimbabwe had moved four places up from 124 to 128 on the world ICT Development Index in the period 2008 to 2010.
Over 30 companies exhibited at the e-Tech Africa Expo conference and exhibition which ran from 1-5 October.
The five-day event was expected to give participants a deeper appreciation of the role of ICT in socio-economic development.
It ran under the theme “Exploiting the Potential of ICTs for Sustainable and Socio-Economic Transformation”. — New Ziana.
