SMALL and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are being helped to advance technologically by the Government through a comprehensive strategy to enhance infrastructure, promote digital literacy and strengthen cyber security.

Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Minister Monica Mutsvangwa addressed delegates at the 14th SME International Expo held at Harare Gardens yesterday, under the theme: “Accelerating productivity with new technologies and artificial intelligence.”

Minister Mutsvangwa thanked the organisers, highlighting their resilience and hard work in promoting the sector.

“Over the last 14 years, we have witnessed the phenomenal growth of this annual showcase focusing on the strengthening of links and synergies among micro, small and medium enterprises, large corporations and Government,” she said.

“This platform is an opportunity for stakeholders to share experiences on strategies to promote the development and growth of the sector in Zimbabwe.”

Minister Mutsvangwa underscored the significant impact of SMEs on employment and gross domestic product, noting that they account for more than 80 percent of Africa’s employment and contribute half of the continent’s GDP.

The 2021 SME Survey in Zimbabwe found the sector comprises 3,4 million businesses, providing full-time employment to over 4,8 million people in Zimbabwe.

“These statistics bear testimony to the instrumental role SMEs play in propelling the modernisation and industrialisation of our economy,” she added.

The Minister highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence (AI), that it is no longer a futuristic concept but a reality reshaping how businesses operate.

“SMEs should leverage the adoption of digital technologies and AI to increase productivity, enhance the quality of products, and improve customer satisfaction.”

She applauded President Mnangagwa for his commendable commitment to advancing digital infrastructure in the country, particularly through investments to expand broadband connectivity and deploying 5G networks.

“I am particularly heartened by the Government’s embrace of Starlink satellite technology, which represents a significant step toward achieving universal digital access.

“With Starlink, the reception of digital information is akin to the delivery of sunlight and raindrops from the sky accessible to users anywhere, anytime.

“This innovation embodies the spirit of inclusivity in the pursuit of the Holy Grail of universal digital information.”

Minister Mutsvangwa acknowledged the challenges SMEs faced in adopting new technologies, including limited access to affordable technology and the cyber threats faced.

“These challenges are real, but not insurmountable. By working together as Government, the private sector, and other stakeholders, we can create a conducive environment for innovation and growth.”

Government has introduced initiatives to support SMEs in this technological transition, including investments in digital infrastructure and partnerships with technology companies.

“Our Government is committed to bridging the digital divide, empowering SMEs with the necessary skills, and ensuring a secure digital future,” she said.

The Minister encouraged attendees to seize the opportunities presented at the Expo to network and explore new technological integrations in their businesses. “Together, let us accelerate productivity, drive innovation, and build a prosperous future for our nation.

“The 14th SME International Expo has brought together various stakeholders, providing a unique opportunity for collaboration and growth in Zimbabwe’s vibrant SME sector,” she remarked.

Speaking at the same event, one of the heads of an SME, Mrs Alice Chamboko, thanked the Second Republic for the support given to small businesses.

“With the invention of Starlink, our business will improve as we will be able to enhance our marketing efforts online, as the network will be very quick and accessible.

“This will allow individuals from remote areas or internationally to connect. Hence, this will enable SMEs to be more efficient,” Mrs Chamboko said.
