THE empowerment of women can be enhanced through their active participation in leadership and economic development processes, a local organisation has said.
To achieve this end, Jekesa Pfungwa-Vuli Ncqondo is rolling out programmes that promote women’s involvement and meaningful contribution to the country’s development.
The development partner’s programmes officer, Ms Grace Kuvengurwa said the marginalisation of women will soon be a thing of the past as they step up efforts to empower them.
Jekesa Pfungwa-Vuli Ncqondo have engaged communities in Chipinge and Goromonzi districts for social mobilisation of women.
In Chipinde rural, the organisation is implementing the programme in wards 12, 13 and 14.
Speaking during a two-day training workshop held at Nyaututu Village in Ward 12 this week, Ms Kuvengurwa said promoting women’s rights to influence social transformation is key in empowering them.
“It is important to involve women in initiatives that empower them to participate in and contribute to local development processes. As an organisation, we are interested in having women have influence on property rights, marriage laws and gender equity.
“Women should be able to claim their rights to enable them to participate in leadership and decision-making processes as well starting from community up to district and national levels. Women have huge potential to make a difference if they are meaningfully involved and impediments hindering them must be removed,” said Ms Kuvengurwa.
She added that gender based violence must be tackled as it has negative bearing on the empowerment of women.
Addressing participants at the workshop, Jekesa Pfungwa-Vuli Ncqondo director, Ms Bertha Jambaya urged women to be proactive and take up leadership roles so as to influence social transformation.
The organisation is also educating women on climate change.
