Youths have been urged to shun dependency and embrace innovation, which positions them to be the key drivers of Africa’s economic growth.
These remarks were made last Friday at the Youth Leadership Diplomatic Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The event was convened under the theme “A Pact for the New Spirit of Pan-Africanism through Globalisation, Innovation-Led Economic Integration, and Peacebuilding”.
Ethiopia’s Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Dr Ergoge Tesfaye emphasised the pivotal role of young leaders in achieving Africa’s economic and political aspirations.
“Young leaders hold the key to unlocking Africa’s potential. Their vision and innovation are essential in driving the continent towards sustainable economic growth and political empowerment,” she said.
“Empowering the youth is not just an investment in individuals, but a commitment to a future where Africa stands tall, self-reliant, and ready to take the lead on the global stage.”
International Youth Connect (IYC) spokesperson Mr Daniel Zinyama echoed the same sentiments, underscoring the need for peace as a foundation for economic growth and sustainable development.
“Peace is the bedrock of prosperity. Wthout it, economic growth is merely a fleeting dream, overshadowed by conflict and instability,” he said.
“Sustainable development flourishes in a climate of peace, where communities can unite, innovate, and invest in their futures without the threat of disruption.”
He added that Governments must invest in digital skills training programmes to prepare youths for the evolving job market.
During the conference, a call to strengthen regional institutions like ECOWAS, SADC, and the AU was made as they are vital for fostering unity, enhancing collaboration, and addressing shared challenges, ultimately paving the way for a more integrated and resilient Africa.
