A FORMER student at Chomuuyu Primary School has donated building materials worth US$7000 to help complete stalled construction work at the school.
The Mazowe-based school has been struggling with ageing infrastructure and to cope with a growing number of learners.
In an interview with H-Metro, the benefactor, Eng Cleopas Mupereki (40), said he felt compelled to give back to his former school.
Eng Mupereki was at the school between 1991 and 1997.
“When I last visited the school, I saw that there were projects which had already been started but were not progressing.
“As a former student, my heart pains me to see that there are children who do not have proper classes or shelter to study in,” said Eng Mupereki.
The donation included cement, roofing materials, window frames, panes, GPC and other essential supplies.
“The community helped with gravel, laying of bricks and sand, so I am providing the finances.
“Once we finish this block, I will also assist in repairing broken windows and roofs at the school.”
Chomuuya Primary School deputy headmaster, Ishmael Tongai, said the donation was the first of its kind and would ease pressure.
“It is difficult to manage lower-grade classes because they are overcrowded.
“This school serves many villages and the enrolment numbers are high.
“The new block will lessen the burden on our few available classrooms, especially during the rainy season,” he said.
Councillor Wunganai Moyo said the school block had remained incomplete for five years due to a lack of funding.
“We didn’t know where we would get the money.
“Due to drought, the little income people had went towards food. We are grateful to have one of our own coming back to help.
“So far, he has given us bags of cement and pledged to continue supporting us until the project is completed,” said Cllr Moyo.
