THE National Blood Service of Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has assured the nation that it has enough blood in stock to cope with increased demand associated with road accidents during the festive season.
However, NBSZ faces a challenge of stocking up on various blood groups such as blood group O.
NBSZ spokesperson Miss Esther Masundah said they had over a week’s supply of blood and were working tirelessly to stock up blood banks.
“We have over a week’s supply of blood, which we expect should be adequate to last the festive season. The only challenge we are facing is stocking up on different blood groups such as blood group O. We are working flat out to ensure that our stocks have adequate supplies and also in acquiring different blood groups,” said Miss Massundah.
She said the campaigns they were holding as NBSZ, would resume on 27 December, as people had retired to various destinations for the holidays.
“We will resume our blood campaigns on the 27th of December and we are hoping people will be more co-operative. We were presently doing the Pledge 25 Youth Donor Month campaign which was launched on 1 December and will run until January 2018,” said Miss Masundah.
She added that NBSZ would soon launch more campaigns that would be targeting various organisations and churches.
“Our campaigns had the objective of meeting the national requirements by ensuring there is enough blood for distribution to hospitals during the festive season that we are already in,” she said.
Miss Masundah said the campaigns have so far been successful.
She said NBSZ would soon partner with other stakeholders to ensure their campaigns were 100 percent effective.
She urged the public to donate blood to save lives.
