EUROPEAN Union (EU) Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Jobst Kirchmann, has urged men to actively participate in ending domestic violence, sexual harassment and protecting women.
Addressing diplomats and business leaders in Harare yesterday, Kirchmann encouraged men to be there for girls and women using the theme “HE FOR SHE”.
“Beating up your wife or your girlfriend does not prove that you are a man.
“Love shouldn’t hurt, especially if it results in a black eye, loss of teeth and death. Men need to engage at all levels of the community as well as in all the spaces where we meet.
“Men should play an important role in helping making gender equality a reality,” he said.
Kirchmann said everyone can achieve great results through cooperation.
“We can achieve great results in the private and public arena if women and men have equal opportunities and if those, in these different spheres, speak out against gender-based inequality, support initiatives that seek to promote gender equality and use our influence to challenge the status quo. We will have many specific projects for gender, but all projects will have gender equality as a principal or significant objective,” he said.
