POLICE have said there is a disturbing spike in cases of women killing their own children.
Investigations have shown that many are getting more daring as the country grapples with the problem of infanticide, baby dumping and abortions.
Police have said baby dumping was worsening and they want everyone to play a part in dealing with this menace.
Many babies are found at rubbish dumps or in pit toilets.
“Police in Harare are investigating a case of infanticide in which the body of a newly-born baby boy was found in a state of decomposition at a dump site along Stanstead Road, Mabelreign,” national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.
“Police are investigating a case of exposing an infant, in which a baby boy (approximately one-day-old), was found dumped in the grass beside a footpath that joins New Lobengula and Inkanyezi Primary School in Lobengula West, Bulawayo.
“The umbilical cord was still attached to the baby and the baby was admitted at Mpilo Hospital.”
He said police were also investigating a case of baby dumping after the body of a still born baby was found at a dump site at Kuwadzana 3 shops.
This incident comes a few days after a 34-year-old woman from Chiwundura was arrested after she gave birth and fatally struck the baby using a cooking stick.
The suspect, Susan Manikayi, went into labour while in the kitchen last Sunday.
She then instructed two minors, she was staying with, to go outside.
But, they peeped through the kitchen window while she was delivering a baby.
Soon after giving birth, she took a cooking stick and struck the new-born twice on the head, killing the baby instantly.
