A clash over fishing nets between two former inmates at Chikurubi Damview ended tragically in the early hours of Sunday morning after Stanley Dhlamini Tutani (46) fatally struck Tanyaradzwa Innocent Muzari (27).
Tutani was Muzari’s former neighbour and friend at Chamboko Farm in Gletwin. The two’s relationship deepened during their time together at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, where they became involved in fish mongering at the ZPCS Damview upon completing their jail terms.
However, their friendship soured after a misunderstanding that occurred approximately two weeks before the fatal encounter.
At around 3 am on the fateful day, tempers flared while they were fishing at the guarded dam.
Muzari confronted Tutani, accusing him of stealing his fishing nets. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation.
“In the midst of the struggle, the accused attempted to drag the (now) deceased towards the deep end of the water,” said Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza.
“Despite attempts by the informant to intervene, the situation worsened.”
Insp Chakanza said the informant managed to carry Muzari for about 15 metres before deciding to put him down and go to seek help.
Upon his return, he said he discovered that Muzari was unresponsive.
“Muzari’s body was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for a post-mortem as police continue to investigate this murder case involving fish mongers at Chikurubi Damview.”
Muzari served eight years for rape, while Tutani was previously incarcerated for poaching.
