A 26-year-old woman was fatally stabbed by her ex-husband in Gokwe North after she rejected his attempts to reconcile, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred on April 7 at Huni Compound, near Zenda Business Centre, under Chief Chireya.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko identified the deceased as Nancy Sumburani (26), a resident of Huni Compound. The suspect, Learnard Tomu (30), of Village 24 A, Headman Fakazi, Chief Chireya, Gokwe, has been arrested.
Insp Mahoko said Tomu visited the business centre in an effort to mend his relationship with Sumburani.
He found her at home with her sister, Alerta Makore. The three then engaged a man identified as Jonathan, an uncle to the deceased, who mediated the discussion.
“Sumburani refused the reconciliation, citing the violent behaviour of Tomu, which angered him before he went away, only to return after about 30 minutes,” Insp Mahoko said.
Upon his return, Tomu demanded back a mobile phone and US$100 in cash that he claimed to have given her while they were still together. An altercation broke out, and Tomu produced a knife, stabbing Sumburani multiple times. She died on the spot.
Police from ZRP Nembudziya attended the scene. The suspect was arrested following preliminary investigations. The body was taken to Gokwe North District Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem.
