FORMER National Social Security Authority (NSSA) chairman Dr Emmanuel Fundira, whose tenure was terminated on June 23, 2025, has reflected on an “extremely rewarding” period marked by significant strides in governance, financial stability, and enhanced social security provisions for pensioners.
Reflecting on his tenure after taking the helm during a challenging time, including a Government-initiated forensic audit, Dr Fundira said in an interview that his board successfully navigated NSSA towards a path of unprecedented growth and accountability.”
Dr Fundira’s immediate priority upon his appointment on May 8, 2023, was to implement the recommendations of a forensic audit spanning from September 2022 to May 2023.
This critical undertaking focused on strengthening governance frameworks, initiating disciplinary actions against implicated individuals, and bolstering compliance mechanisms.
Despite facing “pushback from those implicated,” Dr Fundira noted the recommendations were successfully executed without causing any major instability, highlighting the board’s resolute leadership.
“My contract was terminated on the 23rd of June, and obviously, the reasons we were given for the termination of the contract, which was still running until May 28, 2028, were to do with the reconfiguration and the desire by the ministry to lay a new foundation for NSSA.
“What the termination, however, did not indicate was the various sections in the NSSA Act or in the Public Antitrust Corporate Governance Act on which it is based.
“But be that as it may, we are happy to say that those we deploy are the same people who can also withdraw those appointments and we wish the new trajectory which the Minister is setting up well.
“However, we just regret that we have not been able to hand over the various strategic decisions and plans we had to the new board, which has been created.
“That kind of arrangement has not been facilitated and is something which we still feel is an imperative.”
A new NSSA board, chaired by Bulawayo City Council town clerk Mr Christopher Dube, has since been appointed.
