George Maponga in Masvingo
Hundreds of people from all walks of life thronged the Masvingo Provincial Heroes Acre today to pay their last respects to liberation war hero, Retired Assistant Commissioner Spain Mawerewere.
Rtd Ass Comm Mawerewere was a senior officer within the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services in Masvingo before his retirement.
The former prisons boss died on July 17 after a long illness.
He was 68.
President Mnangagwa conferred liberation war hero status on Rtd Ass Comm Mawerewere in recognition of the role he played in the struggle for Zimbabwe’s independence as a freedom fighter.
Rtd Ass Comm Mawerewere served Zimbabwe with distinction.
Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira paid tribute to President Mnangagwa for honouring the late hero.

Minister Chadzamira told mourners that Zimbabwe needs patriotic and dedicated young people who can take a cue from the sacrifices made by Rtd Ass Comm Mawerewere and other heroes.
Before his remains were lowered into the grave at the provincial shrine, Rtd Ass Comm Mawerewere was honoured with a gun salute by a detachment from the 4 Infantry Brigade.
The burial was attended by war veterans, senior Government officials and service chiefs.
