A Marondera man, Ezekiel Chibvongodze, has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife Evelyn Mitchel Katakwe (26) and their son Tawanda (6) in cold blood last night.

The Herald visited the alleged murder scene in Nyameni suburb where relatives of the deceased were gathered.
Blood stains were still on the floor of the kitchen and outside.

There were also blood stains on the dining room floor where Tawanda was allegedly murdered.

A tenant at the house, Mrs Egenia Bhainai narrated to The Herald what she allegedly heard and saw leading up to the death of the two.

“I was in my room when I heard the woman crying out for help,” she said.

“‘Aichema achiti ndiri kubaiwa nebanga, ndava kufa ndibatsireiwo’. (She was crying out for help saying she was being stabbed with a knife and she was dying).

“I rushed to their bedroom door and tried to open it but failed as it was locked from inside. I started banging on the door and shouting but no one opened it. The woman continued crying helplessly.

“Later on, I heard someone unlock the door and I ran to my bedroom and locked myself inside. I was afraid that the man would also attack me.

“I then took a peek and saw the woman staggering out while crying and bleeding. She came through my kitchen door and fell outside. Her husband then rushed out through another door.”

Mrs Bhainai said she went to get help from neighbors and when she came back she could not find the injured woman where she had left her.

“I went inside the house thinking that she had gone back inside. When I entered their dining room, I saw their son lying on the floor with a knife stuck in his back.”

Mrs Bhainai said she screamed to alert people.

“I went outside to search for Mitchell. That is when I found her lying about 30 metres from the house, breathing faintly. I asked her what was happening but she only stared at me as she was struggling to breathe.

“We tried to get a vehicle to take her to the hospital but failed and she died.”

By the time The Herald left the scene, police details had arrived with the accused for indications.

The large gathering at the scene was shouting and scolding him.

The Herald could not obtain a comment from the police as efforts to contact them were unsuccessful.
