ARTS ensemble group Ezimnyama once again proved their dominance on the traditional dance stage after clinching first place at the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival held at Manor Hotel in Bulawayo on Saturday, marking their third major triumph in the competition.
The seasoned outfit outshone several traditional dance groups with a captivating Tsutsube performance that earned them a US$2 500 cash prize and qualification for the national finals set for July 11 at White City Stadium in Bulawayo later this year.
Their latest victory adds to an already impressive record, having previously won the national title in 2017 and 2019, while this year’s qualification also marks the third time the group has secured a place at the national finals.
The festival was a vibrant celebration of culture and heritage, with groups taking to the stage clad in traditional attire and performing energetic routines backed by chants and drum rhythms. From the opening performances, groups showcased different traditional dances reflecting the richness and diversity of Zimbabwean culture, with audiences responding enthusiastically throughout the day.
During intervals, the event’s MC kept the atmosphere lively through dance challenges, singing contests and musical chairs competitions, where audience members walked away with Chibuku merchandise. As judges finalised their scores, anticipation filled the venue before officials from the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe announced the winners.
Bambanani Traditional Dance Group, performing Isitshikitsha, finished in third place and received US$1 000. Mthwakazi Kandaba Arts claimed second place through their Setapa dance performance, earning US$1 500 and a place at the national showcase.
However, it was Ezimnyama’s presentation that stole the spotlight. Armed with traditional hunting implements and moving in sync with bongo drum beats, the group delivered a performance that left fans cheering and secured them another memorable victory.
“We feel overwhelmed because coming into such a big competition and leaving as number one is something worth celebrating. This victory is very important to us and gives us the momentum to go and represent our province well at the finals at White City stadium,” said Ezimnyama Arts Ensemble director, Phibion Ncube.
The Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival provincial finals continue this Saturday, with competitions heading to Masvingo and Mashonaland Central provinces. Dancers in Masvingo will compete at Tafara Madondo Hotel, while Mashonaland Central Province will host its showcase at The Groove Bar as groups battle for places at the national finals.
