AFTER a six-year hiatus, the Face of Bulawayo pageant is making a grand comeback, but this time, it is more than just glitz and glamour. This year, the pageant carries a powerful theme: “Taking Stride against Breast Cancer.”
This new focus turns the event from a beauty contest into a powerful platform for awareness, education and community action against breast cancer.
More than 30 contestants will take to the stage, competing not only for the coveted crown, but also for the honour of becoming ambassadors in the fight against breast cancer.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, organisers Mthokozisi “Mzee” ka Sigola and Eddlight “Yellow” Moyo outlined the life-changing impact they envision through this year’s edition.
Mzee said their goal is to educate both contestants and audiences on the risks, symptoms, and the critical importance of early breast cancer detection, promote community engagement to support awareness initiatives and eliminate social stigma and encourage open conversations to highlight the reality that breast cancer also affects men.
Yellow said preparing contestants for this year’s pageant will go beyond traditional runway and etiquette coaching.

“To prepare contestants, we’ll provide comprehensive training on breast cancer awareness and advocacy. Contestants will also be encouraged to share personal stories and experiences related to breast cancer, and they’ll take part in awareness campaigns and promotional activities.”
This approach, he said, will ensure that the message of breast cancer awareness extends far beyond the stage and into the community.
“We’ll partner with local breast cancer organisations, hospitals and healthcare providers. Our collaborations will include community groups, schools and businesses to drive the message home.”
To amplify the campaign’s reach, organisers have planned robust social media campaigns, as well as community outreach programmes to educate and provide direct support for those affected by breast cancer.
“The pageant is not just about raising awareness, it’s about delivering real impact. Fundraising and donation drives will be held during the event, with proceeds directed toward supporting local breast cancer organisations and research initiatives, funding patient care and support programmes, and sustaining ongoing awareness and education campaigns within the community,” said Yellow.
He said the red-carpet event will feature contestant showcases, talent segments, live performances by local artistes, and powerful testimonies from breast cancer advocates and survivors.
The evening will also include special guest appearances, motivational speeches and recognition awards for participants and key supporters.
October is recognised globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to promoting screening and reducing risk factors for a disease that affects 2,3 million women worldwide, according to Breastcancer.org. — Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
