FOR sending the police on a wild goose chase after making a false vehicle theft report landed a Mutare man in trouble with the law. Jeremiah Makoni (30) of Greenside low-density suburb was sentenced to 60 days behind bars after he pleaded guilty before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura. He was charged with deliberately supplying false information to the police as defined in Section 180 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
Prosecuting was Mr Fletcher Karombe. Makoni was, however, given an option to pay $60 fine. It was alleged that on August 11, Nyarai Faith Matabini, a police officer was assigned to investigate a matter of theft of trust property in which the complainant was Makoni and the accused was Forward Chirombo.
During investigations Matabini discovered that Makoni had stated that Chirombo had stolen his motor vehicle, a Toyota Hiace, Registration Number ABG 4182 and sold it to London Gambe.
“However, Chirombo denied ever stealing the vehicle and produced an agreement of sale in which Makoni had sold the vehicle in question to him. “On the agreement of sale, it was stated that the vehicle had been sold by Makoni to Chirombo on January 16, 2016 for $3 000.
“Of the total amount, $500 had already been paid to Makoni and the balance was to be paid at $100 on a weekly basis,” said Mr Karombe. Makoni, however, told the court that he had made the false report out of anger because Chirombo was now failing to pay the outstanding debt.
