A 25-year-old man from Esigodini, Sekhona Nkomo, has been arrested for fatally assaulting his 54-year-old uncle, Norman Moyo, during a dispute over a cow.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Chiratidzo Dube, said the attack occurred on September 9 at around 10 pm. Moyo sustained injuries and died on September 17 while admitted to hospital.
Inspector Dube explained that Moyo and Nkomo were at a family gathering celebrating Nkomo’s return from South Africa when the misunderstanding arose. Nkomo picked up a wooden log and struck Moyo twice on the neck.
“On 9 September 2025 at around 10PM, Norman Moyo was part of the family members who had gathered drinking beer and braaing some meat to celebrate the return of his nephew Sekhona Moyo from South Africa. During the course of the event, Moyo approached the accused and told him that he had sold a cow to the accused’s father.
“Nkomo accused his uncle of short changing his father during the sale of the cow. The accused went on to pick a log and struck Moyo twice on the back of the neck and he fell down. Moyo sustained a swollen head as a result of the assault and was ferried to Esigodini District Hospital for medical attention, where he was transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital for further management,” she said.
Insp Dube said the matter was reported to police, leading to Nkomo’s arrest.
She added that Moyo succumbed to his injuries on September 17 at around 10 am.
