Family legacy blooms into hospitality revolution

A new chapter in Bulawayo’s hospitality and events industry is about to unfold as two family-driven establishments, “Rose of Itai” and “Headquarters Pub and Grill”, prepare to officially open their doors, carrying with them a legacy rooted in philanthropy, culture and community service.

Behind the ambitious venture is Tabita Siwela, the first-born daughter (umafungwase) of the late Itai Mabuyane, working alongside her siblings, John and Joseph Mabuyane, to transform their mother’s enduring values into businesses designed to serve not only customers, but the wider community.

The siblings say the establishments are more than commercial ventures. They are living tributes to a woman remembered for her generosity, unwavering Christian faith and commitment to uplifting others.

Itai Mabuyane was widely known as a humanitarian and devoted congregant of the Anglican Cathedral Church where compassion, service and fellowship were hallmarks of her life.

Those principles now underpin the family’s latest investment, one that seeks to blend entrepreneurship with social responsibility.

At the heart of the project is Tabita, who has naturally assumed the family’s matriarchal role following her mother’s passing.

A philanthropist in her own right, she hopes the businesses will become extensions of her mother’s compassionate spirit while contributing to Bulawayo’s economic and cultural landscape.

“These ventures are inspired by our mother’s life. She believed in serving people with dignity, kindness and love. We want every guest who walks through our doors to experience those same values.”

The first of the two establishments, Rose of Itai, promises to redefine Bulawayo’s events industry by creating an environment where elegance seamlessly meets African identity.

Stepping inside the venue revealed an interior carefully curated to celebrate culture without sacrificing modern sophistication.

Cream-coloured walls provide a subtle backdrop for an impressive display of woven baskets, reed mats, and richly patterned African fabrics, transforming ordinary décor into a visual celebration of Zimbabwean heritage.

A plush velvet accent chair positioned atop a cowhide rug creates an intimate lounge area that doubles as a striking photographic backdrop, reflecting a growing demand for aesthetically pleasing event spaces.

Every detail has been intentionally selected. Dining tables dressed in crisp white linen are paired with contemporary patterned tablecloths, neatly arranged placemats, polished cutlery and crystal-inspired glassware, creating an atmosphere suited to weddings, corporate functions, birthdays, intimate dinners and cultural celebrations.

Rather than simply offering equipment hire, Rose of Itai aims to curate memorable experiences that showcase African craftsmanship while meeting international standards of hospitality.

Adding further creative strength to the venture is acclaimed Bulawayo actress and visual artist Nomvuyiso Mabi, who will oversee operations at Rose of Itai.

Her extensive background in the creative sector is expected to influence the venue’s artistic programming, customer experience and aesthetic appeal, reinforcing the establishment’s ambition to become more than an events venue, but a cultural destination.

Complementing Rose of Itai is Headquarters Pub and Grill, a modern hospitality concept poised to inject fresh energy into Bulawayo’s dining and entertainment scene.

From its contemporary branding to its bold exterior graphics celebrating premium beverages and flame-grilled cuisine, the establishment immediately presents itself as a lifestyle destination rather than a conventional pub.

Its biggest attraction will be a purpose-built outdoor braai section featuring multiple braai stands where patrons can enjoy freshly grilled meat prepared in full view.

Instead of concealing the cooking process behind kitchen walls, Headquarters Pub and Grill intends to make the braai itself part of the entertainment.

Guests will be able to gather around the grills, interact with chefs, socialise and savour Zimbabwe’s cherished braai culture in an atmosphere defined by the aroma of sizzling meat, music and lively conversation.

Outlining the concept, one family member said the establishment came as an idea to allow people to enjoy liquor while sharing stories.

“This will be a place where people come and enjoy food and liquor while conversing real life issues. Some of the funniest stories, releast life problems and solutions are found in such set-ups.”

The concept reflects a growing shift within the hospitality industry towards experience-driven dining, where customers seek memorable social environments as much as quality food.

The venue is designed to accommodate diverse clientele, from families and corporate groups to sports enthusiasts and weekend revellers, combining premium service with an accessible, community-focused atmosphere.

For the Mabuyane family, however, success will not solely be measured by bookings or customer numbers.

Instead, they hope both establishments will become community spaces that embody their late mother’s values of generosity, hospitality and inclusion.

Their vision is to build businesses that celebrate Bulawayo’s rich cultural identity while creating employment opportunities, supporting local creatives and contributing to the city’s growing tourism and hospitality economy.

Preparations for the Rose of Itai and Headquarters Pub and Grill’s formal introduction are at an advanced stage and the family believes they are not merely opening businesses but continuing a legacy.

It is a legacy born from the life of Itai Mabuyane – a woman whose commitment to faith, humanity and service touched many lives – and one that her children now hope will continue to flourish through spaces where people gather to celebrate, connect and create lasting memories.

In doing so, the Mabuyane siblings are demonstrating that the strongest foundations for business are sometimes built not on profit alone, but on purpose, heritage and the enduring power of family.
