THE 74th birthday celebration of Gogo Tecla Mareya in Waterfalls, Harare, last week evoked memories of Nyanga Bus Disaster for the family from Honde Valley.

The country’s worst road traffic accident claimed the lives of 89 people, including 82 Regina Coeli High School students, as well as Gogo Tecla’s daughter on August 3, 1991.

Gogo Tecla introduced her great-grandchildren, including one who survived the tragic accident, during the birthday party.

She said she had 10 children, five sons and five daughters, and out of the daughters, one perished in the disaster.

“Today I am happy to have my great grandchildren and one who survived the Nyanga Bus Disaster. I want to thank God for turning 74 years,” she said.

The birthday celebration was held at a house warming of one of her sons, Tendai Mareya, who is also the chairperson of the Chitungwiza Business Against Crime Forum.
