A Chimanimani man was taken aback after discovering that his wife was used by his father to appease an avenging spirit without his knowledge.
It is alleged that Alford Chigidi’s late father appeased an avenging spirit by offering his daughter-in-law, Ronica Mahweya, as a wife.
It is believed that this is now having terrible consequences on the couple’s daughters Melania (38), Merciline (34) and Janet (20), who are yet to get married.
This was revealed after the trio’s mother, Mahweya, recently dragged her husband’s brother, Wilson Chigidi, to Acting Chief Saurombe’s court.
Mahweya was accompanied by two of her daughters and her husband, Alford Chigidi.
“My daughters are not married and have no children. At my age I do not have any grandchild or son-in-law. This hurts so much. I am not accusing anyone of any wrongdoing, but I am humbly asking my husband’s brothers to help in freeing my children from this curse.
“We have consulted several traditional and spiritual healers and were told that the curse came from their paternal grandfather, who is long dead,” she said.
Alford said for years, he has been trying in vain to meet his brothers with the intention of finding a solution for his daughters’ predicament.
“For years, I have been trying to engage my brothers so that they assist me in reversing this curse.
“This is traumatising because my daughters are getting old, yet they have no children or husbands. It hurts, my wife cries every night because of this issue. I believe my daughters are always crying and I feel for them,” he said.
“I was born in a family of 10 siblings and all of my brothers and sisters’ children are married. Only mine are being affected. It appears as if I have a hand in my daughters’ suffering, but my hands are clean. We have consulted traditional and spiritual healers who told us that my late father was behind all this,” he said.
However, it emerged during the court session that Alford’s late father paid Ronica’s lobola on his behalf.
“When Ronica joined this family, our father forked out $100, which was about three quarters of the full amount. We thought our father loved Alford so much, but he was hoodwinking him because he wanted to use his wife to appease the avenging spirit of a man he had killed.
“We look forward to having the curse reversed,” said Wilson, adding that they are in the process of solving the matter, although they are encountering challenges along the way.
Acting Chief Saurombe said Alford deserved to know the truth.
“This was part of our tradition and culture, a father would help his son marry a woman. Girls were seconded to appease avenging spirits, but this has since been abolished.
“Your father was wrong in not telling you that you were marrying a woman for the dead man and that your children would be that man’s children.
“Usually children born in such a marriage do not prosper or get married if they do not recognise the avenging spirit as their father. The Chigidi family tricked Alford by not telling him the truth.
“This is now affecting these three women. They should get the necessary help so that they can get married and have their own children,” said Acting Chief Saurombe.
He ordered the family to consult spiritual healers over the issue.
The matter was adjourned to November 12.
