embarrass Malawi 8-2 in a Cosafa Women’s Championship tie at Rufaro yesterday.
The Mighty Warriors chose the grand stage, with Fifa president Sepp Blatter and secretary-general Jerome Valcke watching from the stands, to produce an irresistible display of attacking football to bury the Malawians.
Cheerleader Chris “Romario” Musekiwa described it as an historic day in the history of Zimbabwe football.
“It was an historic day for Zi-mbabwe football as the Fifa President Sepp Blatter graced the occasion at Rufaro,” said Musekiwa.
“We are quite happy with his decision to come to Zimbabwe and it shows that Fifa is now building confidence in Zimbabwean football.
“This has never happened be-fore.”
Prominent Warriors’ fan, Supa “ZiSuper” Mushonga, said the Mighty Warriors’ destruction of Malawi could not have come at a better day for Zimbabwe.
“We want to thank Mr Blatter for coming to Zimbabwe and the Zifa board, who made it all possible, and all the fans who came to cheer the Mighty Warriors today,” said Mushonga.
“We want to win the Cosafa trophy and we want the team to go all the way and win it.”
Another fan, Shumba Zviwanikwa, hailed the Zifa board for allowing the fans to watch the game free of charge.
“The vision we showed today, as a football nation, should be enough to take us to the final of this tournament,” he said.
“We are not going to throw our towels down but keeping fighting for the battle until we take the trophy.”
He said now that the Mighty Warriors have made it into the quarter-finals, it was important for supporters to come in their thousands to fill the stadiums and help the team to win the Cosafa Trophy.
