LOCAL professional golfer Farai Chitengwa is confident local players have a good chance to make a big impression at this year’s edition of the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open. The country’s premier golf tournament, which is sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour, gets underway at Royal Harare tomorrow. Chitengwa is high on confidence after making it into the tournament as an exempted candidate after he won his first Zambezi Tour tournament when he grabbed the Open Classic at Chapman.
The Wingate golfer is hopeful the locals will make their presence felt.
“I’m feeling good and I’m pretty confident of doing well at the Zimbabwe Open this year and I believe a local golfer can win the event,” Chitengwa told The Herald. “This is golf and you never know what the course will throw at you, but I have a feeling that we are going to do better than in the previous outings.
“I am also sure that our local golfers are going to do well this year because they are playing well in a number of the events they have featured in.
“There were a couple of good scores recorded during the tournaments.”
No local golfer has won the Zimbabwe Open since 2000 when Mark McNulty powered to victory at the same venue.
Since then, South African golfers have dominated the tournament.
“I will make sure I fight to make the cut and go all the way to the final round which everyone hopes to do when they enter the event. Winning the Open Classic last year will remain a motivator to me and I am geared up for the event. We have good players who can win the Zimbabwe Open.”
