CAPS United president Farai Jere has picked similarities between the current Green Machine squad with the all-conquering class of 2004 but he wants the team to remain grounded.
Makepekepe have won their opening four games of the season for the first time since 2004 and top the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League standings on 12 points, four above second-placed reigning champions Scottland.
“Remember, this is a marathon,” said Jere.
“We are in a race in a league with very strong teams and it’s a marathon. We are just starting.
“We are not going to say anything about winning the championship at this point in time; no it doesn’t make any sense but we are very happy and we are celebrating what we’ve achieved so far.
“Four out of four, is quite a huge achievement.”
Yet Jere is not surprised with his team’s flying start to the season.
“You know, the current form, we can simply attribute it to the preparations.
“And it was very clear from the onset that our preparations, which we are doing this year, supported by the resources, this team is a team which is likely to achieve something.
“I’m saying likely, but I’m being cautious.
“It’s quite encouraging as this shows that the team is going somewhere; it’s actually speaking to the preparations which we had.”
The Green Machine are looking formidable as a team with individuals’ orientation to the coach’s methodology well in evidence thanks to the bonding and team building the squad went through in Malawi towards the start of the season.
Besides, Jere said, the club’s depth is also coming into play.
“The form we are in is actually speaking to the depth which we have in the squad
We have got so many quality players,” added Jere.
“Can you imagine? We still haven’t introduced our Talent Chamboko, Kennedy Mupomba and Delic Murimba.
“A lot of players are still out there who are very dangerous who can walk into any team and play straightaway.
“You actually witnessed Davison Marowa who only came in for just about 5-10 minutes against Hardrock last Saturday and he caused havoc and he created that goal, the second goal. So we have got a team.
“That’s what I can say. We have got a team. We can go and compete any day, any time.”
