Father-in-law beats up nomadic tsikamutanda

A self-proclaimed traditional healer commonly known as tsikamutanda is nursing wounds after he was beaten up by his father-in-law while in handcuffs for being too nomadic. The father-in-law, Benjamin Mankani, 44, is a member of the local neighbourhood watch committee.  Mankani was apparently unhappy that his daughter was leading a nomadic life as she followed her husband conducting his tsikamutanda duties.

He recalled his daughter, Mary, from her husband, Vusa Nyathi promising he would re-unite with her after he settled down.

Police sources said Nyathi took a break from his duties and visited his father-in-law’s homestead in Game Park Area on the outskirts of Gweru on Sunday afternoon intending to get his wife.

“Nyathi, who had decided to settle with his wife in one place, went to his father-in-law’s homestead on Sunday afternoon where he then told Mankani that he wanted his wife back as he was now planning to settle.  Mankani, who for long had disapproved his daughter’s marriage to the traditional healer, declined to release his daughter arguing that he was not happy with Nyathi’s way of life,” said the source.

The police source said Nyathi insisted on taking away his wife.  Mankani handcuffed him and took a baton which he used to assault him all over the body.

The police said Nyathi made an assault report against his father-in-law. Police spokesperson for Midlands, Inspector Joel Goko, yesterday confirmed the incident.

He said he was still to get details into the matter from the investigating officers.
