An FC Platinum fan was fatally hit by a car in Shurugwi as he celebrated the lifting of the Castle Lager Premiership by the club. Police confirmed the accident, which occurred on Saturday evening in Shurugwi town, when a convoy of cars was on its way from Gweru to Zvishavane.

FC Platinum had just defeated Chapungu FC in Gweru to be crowned 2017 PSL champions. Police identified the deceased as Khumbulani Tshisale (36) of Platinum Park, Zvishavane. FC Platinum spokesperson Ms Chido Chizondo described the incident as tragic.

“The now deceased was in one of the buses which was carrying our supporters back to Zvishavane after the game at Ascot Stadium in Gweru where the team sealed the league championship,” she said.

“When the convoy stopped in Shurugwi with people still in celebratory mood, one of the fans was hit by a car which was behind as he disembarked from the bus.” A witness said the death of the fan dampened the celebrations.

“During the celebrations, some cars which were part of the convoy would skid while honking,” he said. “Tragedy struck when one of the drivers lost control of the vehicle and hit a fan killing him on spot. The celebrations were cut short as people were left in shock.”
