FC Platinum were first to knock on the door, threatening as early as the third minute.
Midfielder Oscar Bhebhe showed great composure to glide past his marker in midfield before slipping in Claivert Tshuma down the right. Tshuma’s cross to went to Devine Mhindirira in the box, but the midfielder could not quite rise high enough to connect.
Just two minutes later, Tshuma again caused problems down the right flank with another dangerous delivery. This time, Highlanders goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda was alert and managed to gather the ball under pressure.
Both teams, true to their philosophies, have been trying to build from the back. FC Platinum have looked slightly more comfortable in that regard, with Highlanders experiencing a few shaky moments under pressure.
The Bulawayo giants nearly found a breakthrough in the 15th minute via a corner. Marvin Sibanda swung in a teasing inswinger, but FC Platinum shot-stopper David Bizabani reacted well to punch clear in a crowded box.
Midway through the half, Highlanders had their most crucial defensive moment. Melikhaya Ncube let fly from the edge of the area with a rocket-bound shot, only for a perfectly timed sliding block by Shepard Mhlanga to deny what looked destined for the net.
Highlanders head coach Pieter De Jongh was visibly animated on the touchline and has already had words with fourth official Mhaka Magare over a few refereeing decisions he felt were questionable.
