TWO University of Zimbabwe students appeared in court yesterday facing disorderly conduct charges after allegedly demonstrating over a fees increases.

Tinotenda Tervin Mwenje and Thelma Nzero appeared before magistrate Munashe Chibanda. The court heard that on September 12, cops from Avondale Police Station were deployed at the University of Zimbabwe, on standby, for an anticipated illegal demonstration by students.

At around midday, a group of students started moving around the university campus singing, and behaving in a disorderly manner, interrupting the smooth-running of business.

The court heard that the ZRP Harare provincial group, Support Unit and suburban district reaction group reacted to the situation, to maintain law and order, and to protect university property.

The police arrested Owen Mashavakure, Tinotenda Mwenje, Tinashe Zana, Fletcher Katewe, Mufaro Vhutuza, Beyond Siwela, Thelma Nzero, Ropafadzo Mutangadura, Godknows Zabhura, Fahima Agija, David Musasa, Natasha Dhliwayo, Sungai Chitodha and Havana Mtetwa, among others.

The rest of the students arrested admitted to the allegations and were fined.

Mwenje and Nzero were remanded out of custody to September 29.
