Prioritise Zim music, DJs urged

H-Metro Reporter

BROADCASTER, Napoleon Nyanhi, has asked  local DJs to play more local music at events.

In a series of tweets, Nyanhi said:

“Zimbabwean DJs at Zimbabwean events, would you please prioritise playing ZIMBABWEAN MUSIC?

“I’m not saying don’t play any foreign music, but eish sometimes it’s too much and a bit embarrassing when we invite non-Zimbo guests.

“They wonder if we don’t have any music of our own.

“We have a cancer of loving zvinhu zvevamwe so a @takuralife song, which is way more popular locally, will be trumped by an old Davido song. Even the event organisers will choose sings like Jawo over Wandachuza.

“@dj_kingher is a gem.

“She’s understood the psychology of hyperlocal content and she’s growing in popularity while others are competing on who can spin the latest Naija beats and US pop and I believe we have a solid catalogue of music as a nation that can keep listeners/fans on their feet all night.

“Even from the last 2yrs alone a DJ can rock with highly popular music without having to rely heavily on artists from abroad.

“In our country, it goes beyond the club, even at national events!

“An event where we are showcasing Zimbabwean pride – you hear the DJ going all out with SA amapiano and US hip hop.

“Chinondishamisa ndechekuti DJ anenge achichinjanisa maNaija nemusic yekuJoza but paanongoridza @exquizit04 @jahprayzah @winkydonline everyone screams vamwe votosimuka kuti vatambewo.

Tinavo maArtists anorira zvekudaro besides these 3 but eh, tinongovashora – Ex Q, Tamy, Ammara, Freeman, JP, Winky, Nutty O, Annatoria, Chengeto Brown, Gary Mapanzure, Ishan Enzo, Feli Nandi, Mbeu, Mambo Dhuterere, Victor, Stot, Takura, Anita Jacxon, Asaph, Tocky Vibes, Nyasha David, Fusion 5 Mangwiro, Mwenje Mathole, Diamond Boys, Sylent Nqo, Holy 10, Voltz.

“There are great lady artists that have broken out in recent years and more keep pushing through.

“The Zimdancehall space is now dominated by Shona songs.

“You hardly hear any Patois.

“I also used to hate it but I decided to allow the genre to evolve on its own and now you’ve got artists that don’t sing or speak a single word of Patois like Tocky, Killer T, Enzo etc.”
