FEMALE artistes proved why Bulawayo is called the City of Queens after putting up a top notch performance at the Women, Wine and Words show on Tuesday. The show which was part of the Intwasa festival programme was held at National Art Gallery in Bulawayo. So superb were their performances that the audience was kept on their feet, clamouring for encores after almost all performances.

As people got into the venue, they were greeted by complimentary wine courtesy of African Distillers – something which clearly boosted the audience’s morale.
The opening act of the night was a play, The Proposition.

The 10-minute play which starred Rejoice Simango, Joice Mpofu and Elton Sibanda was directed by Xanier Dlomo. Outspoken poet Sithandazile Dube was up next with her hilarious poems Izolo Lidlule Lamazolo and Isizwe Bani Esinje. She did not disappoint as she kept the crowds in stitches. She also used her poems to advocate for the upliftment of women through education and their talents.

Young and talented jazz sensation Nomatshawekazi Damasane famously known as Lady Tshawe touched many souls after performing two of her songs, Gentleman’s Love and 10 Things. The songs advocated against violence waged against women by men.

“I am a woman, I was not created with dust but I was created from you (Adam). I was not created so that I can be beaten or be abused by you but I was created so that I find love and be protected by you,” Lady Tshawe told the audience during her performance.

Afro jazz artiste Thandi Dlana also had her fair share of stage performance backed by X-mile and Zet Moyo. They were all dressed in stunning, stylish African attires that complemented their traditional music. Master of ceremony, Mbo Mahocs could not be outdone as she also took to the stage to recite a poem which was an appreciation of mothers for their endurance.

Nobuntu – the country’s only all female imbube group lived to its billing as they thrilled fans with their songs and dance. The group which was the closing act of the night took time to warn men against the violence they impose on women.
