LEGENDARY Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is seriously ill in hospital and underwent surgery yesterday night.
The club released a statement confirming Ferguson was rushed to hospital with a brain haemorrhage and that his procedure went “very well” but he is in intensive care as part of his recovery.
“Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage,” the statement read. “The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery.
“His family requests privacy in this matter.”
Ferguson’s son Darren, who is manager of Doncaster Rovers, missed the final game of the season for his side on Saturday to be with his father and the rest of the family.
A Doncaster club statement said that “Darren Ferguson will not be at Saturday’s game due to family reasons. Darren asks for privacy, and will provide an update through the club during the week.”
Ferguson is Manchester United’s longest-serving manager, bringing to an end his 26-year reign at Old Trafford in 2013 having won 13 Premier League titles, two European Cups and five FA Cups.
The 76-year-old was at Old Trafford last weekend to present outgoing Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger with a commemorative trophy after stepping down from the north London club. — Independent
