Fifa crew focus on Zifa

governing body’s efforts to help turn Zifa into a professional institution gather momentum.
Bruscoli, who is based at the Fifa headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland immediately, joined the pair of Ashford Mamelodi and Brendan Menton, who have been in the country since last Saturday.

Mamelodi, the Fifa development officer for Southern Africa and Menton, the world soccer governing body’s managing consultant have been conducting a performance review exercise aimed at coming up with binding resolution that result in the professioanalising the operations of Zifa.
It is Fifa’s view that most of the biggest challenges facing Zifa apart from being under-funded have a lot to do with the association’s operations and lack of qualified manpower in key managerial positions that would ensure the local soccer mother body’s operations are not centralised on the chief executive.

But Bruscoli, who in charge of the board development of the game on the continent, will be following up on the timelines that Zifa have to meet in their bid to complete their Goal Project II.
Bruscoli, who is no stranger to the country, will also join Mamelodi in Victoria Falls as part of Fifa’s expert team for a high profile seminar for chief executives and secretary generals of 15 Eastern and Southern African countries that will begin in the resort town on Monday morning.

The Fifa senior manager also had a chance to meet with representatives of the local electronic and print media for a no-holds barred indaba at the association’s headquarters. Mamelodi, Menton and Zifa technical director Nelson Matongorere also attended the event.

He also met with the Zifa leadership during their marathon board meeting in the capital yesterday.
Fifa are keen to see Zifa make real progress with the Goal Project at the Zifa Village in Mt Hampden with the world body revealing that they are ready to fund Phase III of the development programme.
In Victoria Falls, the Fifa experts will work with chief executives and secretary-generals from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Various topics related to the governance of the game will come up for discussion at the seminar including club licensing and the player transfers, which have become electronic in line with global trends.

The seminar will also outline the different roles and the working relationship between the secretariat and the executive committees.
Participants will also discuss:

  • Fifa general information (organisation of member associations and development division)
  • Development and technical programmes
  • Roles of the general secretary and technical director within a member association
  • Working relationship and collaboration between executive committee and general secretaries
  • IT challenges with today’s football (Licensing and TMS).”

The delegates will also take time to discuss the scourge of match-fixing and the efforts being made by Fifa and its members associations to fight the threat of betting and match-fixing to the global game..
