Fight poverty

FIGHTING poverty is a battle I have witnessed first-hand and it’s a struggle that affects many of us as learners.

Poverty is a harsh reality that can drive desperation, leading us down paths we might not want to take. When you are living in poverty, every day feels like a fight for survival. You might find yourself begging for scraps just to get by.

Growing up in such environments can be incredibly tough. Simple things like enjoying a decent meal, wearing proper clothes or affording school fees and books become luxuries. Sometimes, you might even struggle to find food for break time or lunch. And when you are already vulnerable, life can give devastating blows, like losing a parent or watching your family fall apart due to divorce.

You’re often left to live with grandparents or relatives, which can be a blessing but also a challenge.
With all this weight on your shoulders, focusing on schoolwork can feel like an impossible task. Your mind is preoccupied with the struggles at home and it’s hard to see a way out. But here is the thing: education is the key to breaking free from poverty’s grip. When you know your situation is tough and you see education as your ticket to a better life, you realise that working hard is not just an option — it’s a necessity.

If you have the chance to go to school, grab it with both hands. Whether someone else is paying your fees or a relative is supporting you, make the most of this opportunity. Put your problems aside for now and focus on your studies.

Life might seem bleak but remember that every season passes. Be patient and start thinking about your future. You have the power to change your story.

Education isn’t just about getting good grades, it’s about gaining the knowledge and skills to build a better life for yourself. It’s about proving to yourself that you are capable of overcoming any obstacle. So, let’s make the most of every opportunity, work hard and create a brighter future for ourselves.
