Local film producers have hailed this year’s Women’s International Film Festival for introducing the new man category that seeks to address issues relating to women in locally produced films.

This category will showcase films highlighting men as positive role models in an initiative by the African Fathers Initiative. The award is going to be named after the late actor Walter Muparutsa under Best Film in the New Man category.

Last year, a total of 87 films ranging from features to documentaries were screened in Harare. Participating countries in this year’s film festival will include local films that will fall under their own special categories.

Participating countries include Sweden, Japan, Namibia, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Kenya, South Africa, Canada and Russia.

Other sponsors who have contributed to the success of the festival are the various embassies sponsoring the events, local NGOs Hivos and Culture Fund Trust of Zimbabwe in partnership with Sida.
