Firm deepens CSR footprint

A GROWING number of Zimbabwean corporates are redefining the scope of business responsibility beyond profit margins, with Billnick Engineering (Pvt) Ltd emerging as a notable player through sustained investment in education infrastructure that is transforming learning environments in mining and rural communities.

Operating as a specialised engineering unit within Billnick Holdings, the company has built a strong reputation in tailings storage facility management and environmental engineering, while simultaneously distinguishing itself through impactful corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives anchored on community development.

Its interventions at Muriel Primary School in Mutorashanga in late 2024 and Dalny 2 Primary School in Kadoma in 2025 stand out as compelling examples of how private sector expertise can be leveraged to address critical social needs.

At Muriel Primary School, Billnick Engineering constructed a modern 40-seater ablution facility, marking its first major foray into education-focused CSR. The initiative extended beyond sanitation, with the donation of 20 all-in-one desktop computers to the secondary school and provision of sports kits, reflecting a holistic approach to learner development.

The momentum was sustained in 2025 with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art ablution block at Dalny 2 Primary School, where improved sanitation has enhanced hygiene standards and restored dignity among learners.

The company’s expanding footprint also includes Hoppers Junior School, where in November last year it constructed an ablution block and provided furniture, further consolidating its commitment to improving learning conditions. In addition, Billnick Engineering sponsored the school’s graduation ceremony, with the company’s founder and director, Mr Sam Manyoni, gracing the occasion as guest speaker. The event was enlivened by a performance from acclaimed musician Andy Muridzo, adding a celebratory dimension to the milestone.

Driving the company’s vision is Mr Manyoni, whose journey from a rural classroom to leading an engineering enterprise continues to shape a philosophy centred on giving back to communities.

Speaking during engagements at both Muriel and Dalny schools, he underscored the long-term value of investing in education infrastructure.

“Education is a generational investment. When we support schools, we are not merely addressing immediate needs but shaping the future of communities and the nation at large,” he said.

Reflecting on the significance of the ablution facilities at Dalny 2 Primary School, Mr Manyoni said they symbolise more than physical infrastructure.

“These facilities are not just buildings. They represent dignity, health and respect for every learner. A clean environment nurtures confidence and pride, which are essential ingredients for success,” he said.

He challenged learners to take responsibility for maintaining the facilities.

“True leadership begins with how you take care of your surroundings. Protect these facilities, maintain them and let them reflect the values of discipline and excellence,” he said.

At Muriel Primary School, Mr Manyoni delivered a broader social message, cautioning young people against substance abuse.

“Success is not reserved for a select few. It favours those who are disciplined and hardworking. Young people must guard against destructive habits that can derail their future,” he said.

He also paid tribute to educators and parents, describing them as central to nation-building.

“Teachers are the architects of our future leaders, and parents are the foundation upon which education thrives. Together, you are building a generation that will carry this nation forward,” he said.

Beyond primary education, the company has extended its interventions to secondary institutions. At Dalny Mine Secondary School, Billnick Engineering recently commissioned a modern science laboratory, reinforcing its commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

School authorities have hailed the development as a turning point.

“This facility is a catalyst for achieving national educational objectives. It provides our learners with the tools to excel in science subjects and compete effectively at higher levels,” said headmaster Mr Donald Tarirah.

Deputy head Mr Owen Sengeya said the laboratory marked a shift from theoretical to practical learning.

“For years, our learners were limited to theory. This laboratory allows them to experiment, validate concepts and develop critical scientific skills,” he said.

Industry observers note that Billnick Engineering’s approach reflects an emerging model of CSR in Zimbabwe, where companies align social investment with their core competencies. By focusing on infrastructure development, environmental sustainability and education, the firm is contributing to national priorities such as improved public health, digital inclusion and skills development.

The company has outlined additional projects, including school perimeter fencing, computer laboratories and water reticulation systems, signalling a long-term commitment to community upliftment.

Communities in Mutorashanga and Kadoma have welcomed the interventions, citing improved sanitation, enhanced learning environments and increased learner motivation.

As Zimbabwe advances towards its development aspirations, the role of private sector partnerships in supporting social infrastructure continues to grow in significance. Billnick Engineering’s expanding footprint demonstrates how deliberate, community-driven initiatives can create lasting impact while reinforcing corporate responsibility.

For Mr Manyoni, the mission remains anchored in purpose and gratitude.

“The schools we come from shaped who we are. Giving back is not an option, it is a responsibility. If we invest in our communities, we invest in the future of our nation,” he said.

Through sustained investment in education and community development, Billnick Engineering is not only building infrastructure, but also laying a firm foundation for a more inclusive and empowered society.
