Kwekwe-based companies Zimasco and Sable Chemicals have raised $250 000 for the refurbishment of Kwekwe District Hospital.

The move was in response to First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s call for a major facelift of the hospital during her visit last month.

The First Lady challenged the business community and companies to help develop the district’s referral hospital.

In an interview yesterday, Kwekwe District Hospital Administrator Mr Kenny Mukonori said the funds were being used to refurbish the hospital’s maternity and children’s wards and kitchen. He said they were also constructing a new incinerator.

“We have some companies and individual businesspeople who have responded to the First Lady’s (Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa) call and have come forward to sponsor the refurbishment of the hospital, which was now in a deplorable state,” he said.

He said the district hospital was last refurbished during the colonial era. He said a local businessman, Mr Jacob Chokururama, had also donated some money towards the refurbishment of the hospital.

“Sable Chemicals is refurbishing the maternity and children’s wards. The work is at 80 percent. The hospital now has a new look.

“Another company, Zimasco, helped to construct an incinerator and donated 42 beds for the maternity wards.
Mr Mukonori said before the construction of an incinerator, which is expected to start working in a week’s time, the hospital used to send its disposables to Gweru Provincial Hospital.
