SEVERAL local air conditioning companies have joined forces in fighting ozone layer depletion caused by the use of different gases.

Speaking during an awareness campaign, Zimbabwe Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Association president, Twine Phiri, said depletion of the ozone layer has affected all forms of life on earth. “As air condition associations, we have come up with this day for climate change awareness in support of the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality.

“We are saying the type of gases that we use in refrigeration are not good for the environment hence we are phasing them out.

“We encourage people to abide by the new gases that are user -friendly to protect the environment which has also affected the climate,” said Phiri.

The awareness campaign was held under the theme “Protect and Preserve, Temperatures Matters”. Previously, R13 and R22 gases were being used by refrigeration and air conditioning companies.

They have, however, been replaced by the R32 gas, which protects the environment.

Phiri said the Government, through different Ministries and stakeholders, will work closely in monitoring that people adopt the new gas.

“If you buy an old fridge, it will be assessed at the border and if it uses old gas, you will be required to refill with the new gas.

“We are doing this for the future generations and this is why we are saying let us all use gases that protect the environment,” he said.

Air conditioning companies, which graced the campaign, included Optional Air, Airite, Twincon, Giluc, Wynands and Alicost, among others.
