GOSPEL music lovers were treated to an electrifying night of renewal, revival, praise and worship as local artistes rose to the occasion, leading in song and devotion at the First Encounter Worship Bulawayo Festival, held at the weekend.

The festival is the brainchild of multi-award-winning, South Africa-based gospel sensation Canaan Nyathi, famed for his smash hit, Usibiyele. The initiative aims to provide local gospel musicians with a platform to showcase their talent and share their ministry with the masses.

Artistes who graced the stage included Siza Mdlongwa, Mai Mwamuka, Abigail Mwembe, Lorraine Maplanka, Faith Mucha, Nkosi Herman, Tehilla Testament, Women of Valour, Family Voices and Dunamis Men.

Vocal Ex deserves special mention for their outstanding performance as backing vocalists for the festival director, Canaan Nyathi, as well as Everton Mlalazi, who appeared in support of local acts.

Although the event was scheduled to start at 2pm, proceedings began at 4:30pm, allowing time for the crowd to build up and ensuring everyone experienced the full line-up of performances.

Tehilla Testament opened the stage with a warm and uplifting set, performing their song Dwala Laphakade, which invoked a sense of healing and called upon God’s presence to bless the festival.

Following their performance, fast-rising gospel sensation Roxie, took to the stage, delivering a worship experience through smooth melodies that connected the soul with the Almighty. Her mature performance earned her praise and she is tipped to become one of Bulawayo’s leading gospel voices this year if she maintains her consistency.

The energetic Minister X followed, reviving the spirit of dance and praise among revellers with well-known medleys such as Jesu Makanaka. His lively set drew crowds to the front of the stage, singing and dancing in celebration.

With the atmosphere ablaze, Siza Mdlongwa stepped up with his natural performing flair. His unique set fused Tshibilika music elements into gospel, keeping the audience dancing non-stop.

Family Voices then took the stage, slowing the tempo and reintroducing worship with John 1 Verse 1, from their latest album, Evidence of the Kingdom. They also performed a Splash Music-inspired medley, which proved a hit, before Psalmist Nkosi Herman delivered a soothing set that paved the way for Everton Mlalazi.

Fresh from directing the Celestial Chorus Soiree in Harare on New Year’s Eve, Mlalazi reaffirmed his status as a gospel powerhouse with a solid 45-minute set. Backed by Vocal Ex, he performed Angeke Kulunge from his latest album Great God, alongside crowd favourites Ndofamba NaJesu, Ndinomira PaJordan and Apo Mambo.

The festival host, Canaan Nyathi, closed the event in style with his signature song Baba Ziveze, followed by Usibiyele, Ukwenzile and Ngithol’ Umhlobo, marking a fitting end to an unforgettable night.

On the sidelines, Nyathi expressed his excitement, describing the festival as a success and the fulfilment of a long-held dream. He hopes the event will establish a strong presence in Bulawayo’s gospel scene, uplifting local talent and creating a platform for fellowship among worshippers.

“During the Covid-19 period, I had a dream of returning home to do something meaningful. That time was difficult for everyone, but I saw God carrying me through all the trials and tribulations. As a way of honouring Him for His blessings, I thought of extending those blessings to others — hence the vision behind this festival.

“I am happy that the dream has finally come true as we saw local artistes taking to the stage, proving that they can use the talents God gave them. This festival brought hope and empowerment to local gospel musicians, and I pray that even going forward, they will continue with the ministry,” said Nyathi.

He revealed that the festival is now officially an annual event, adding that lessons learned from this year will help make the 2027 edition more organised, bigger and better.
