Harare’S First Floor Gallery will tonight open their second exhibition this year with several artistes expected to showcase their work. Artists including Troy Makaza, Miriro Mwandiambira, Julio Rizhi and Takunda Regis Billiat will participate. Gallery marketing manager Marcus Gora said they would showcase works from the emerging artists.
“Basically, the exhibition will feature artworks and installations by emerging artists. We have just come back from the Cape Town Art Fair and we had a successful event that benefited the artists. So we are happy to be having our second exhibition this year,” he said.
He said they were hopeful that people will have a good time as the artists had good artworks. On that same they will be launching a mixtape by Tendai Maraire, brother to the late mbira queen Chiwoniso. Maraire is based in the US and is trying to revive her sister’s legacy.
Gora said Maraire was a successful artiste who was trying to make his way into mbira music.
“Maraire’s is music is mainly hip-hop, but he experiments with mbira and other sounds,” said Gora.
He said a lot was expected at the event as people will be enjoying music from Maraire’s mixtape and the artworks by the artistes.
First Floor Gallery is an international contemporary emerging artists-run gallery.
Founded in December 2009, the gallery is dedicated to supporting the professional and career development of the emerging generation of contemporary Zimbabwean artists locally and internationally through education, experimentation, artist exchange as well as audience and market development to ensure a sustainable future for career artists.
