Government has started distributing food to thousands of families in Harare South constituency, as it moves in to readjust its food assistance support. The programme is aimed at fostering a strong foundation for long-term food and nutrition programmes in the area.
Harare South legislator Cde Tongai Mnangagwa said Government had started distributing food in his constituency targeting the old and the less privileged.
He said the food was being distributed through the Resident Minister’s Office in conjunction with Department of Social Welfare.
“Government, through the Resident Minister’s Office and the Social Welfare Department has embarked on a massive food aid programme in Harare South targeting the old and less privileged families,” said Cde Mnangagwa.
“Almost 2 400 families are being assisted with food monthly, with each family receiving a 50kg bag of maize meal, 25kg rice and at times cooking oil if we have supplies.”
Cde Mnangagwa said the food aid programme was designed to ensure implementation of a variety of food and nutrition security programmes and will run for the next five years.
“Through the programme, the Government is supporting an innovative approach towards ensuring food security and nutrition in Zimbabwe,” he said. “This fosters a stronger foundation that will promote and sustain long-term food and nutrition security.”
Government last week said it will provide food aid to vulnerable households in light of reduced yields that may occur due to the drought that is expected to affect the SADC region this season.
