ZIMBABWE’S football fraternity is mourning the death of one of the country’s earliest soccer icons, Nevison Majuta Masunda, who died on Thursday in Bulawayo at the ripe old age of 101.
Masunda was a pillar of local football, turning out for the then Mashonaland United, now known as Zimbabwe Saints, between 1944 and 1953. He was part of the team before it adopted the name Zimbabwe Saints in 1975, making him one of the true forefathers of the game in Zimbabwe.

Among those he shared the pitch with was none other than the late former Vice President Joseph Msika, known for his rock-solid presence at right-back.
Zifa released a moving tribute on Friday:

“A true pioneer of the local game, Mr Masunda played for Mashonaland and Southern Rhodesia during an era that laid the foundation for Zimbabwean football. He joined the legendary Chikwata in 1944 and lined up alongside notable figures such as the late former Vice President Joseph Msika, representing both club and the Red Army, a select team that carried the hopes of Bulawayo in the prestigious Osborne Cup.”

Zifa praised his longevity and his unwavering dedication to the game:
“His contribution to football and to the history of our nation will be remembered with deep respect. His legacy is a source of inspiration to generations past and present.”

Mourners are gathered at 155 Mahatshula.
The funeral service will be held today at 3PM at Nyaradzo’s Donnington branch.

Rest in power, Chikwata pioneer!
