FOREX DEALER ACQUITTED IN US$30K SAGA

A FOREX dealer, who was accused of diverting US$30k meant to buy goods from South Africa into his own use, has been acquitted.

Rangarirayi Shumbairerwa was cleared of any wrongdoing when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ethel Chichera yesterday.

The court ruled that the State had failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt while the complainant Tamai Dadirai did not produce any accompanying evidence to substantiate her claims.

The magistrate accepted Shumbairerwa’s defence after he produced an acknowledgment of debt signed between him and Tamai’s ex-husband, Salisio Janyure.

Through his lawyer, Shumbairerwa proved that he owed the money to Janyure and not his ex-wife.

“The State failed to prove that Shumbairerwa breached any trust agreement with Tamai, the State did not back its case with any evidence and therefore the accused is found not guilty and acquitted,” ruled magistrate Chichera.

It was the State’s argument that Shumbairerwa and Dadirai had been doing the same business since 2022 but without a paper trail.

Zebediah Bofu represented the State.
