Former cop, wife in $500 000 theft

A FORMER policeman and his wife have appeared in court facing charges of theft of $500 000 from an alleged illegal foreign currency dealer.

The pair, who appeared yesterday in a Bulawayo court was remanded in custody to tomorrow for bail ruling. Presenting the case for the State, Mr Leonard Chile said the two, Fredrick Topia a former policeman and his wife, Nyarai Magaya in the company of one Peter Grassmore Mare, who is at large, connived to defraud a local company — Fedloui Investments Pvt (Ltd) of $500 000 in October this year.

The pair was allegedly said to have transferred money from the company account using EcoCash and then blocked the line before re-opening it and transferring the money into a different account and using the money. They appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Jeconiah Ncube and were represented by lawyers from Tanaka Law Chambers.
